Renovation and Extension of Grundschule Dreiländereck in Perl

Last Friday, the 14th of August, the municipality of Perl received funding for the renovation and extension of Grundschule Dreiländereck. The funding was presented to Mayor Ralf Uhlenbruch by Minister-President Anke Rehlinger and Minister for the Interior, Building and Sport Reinhold Jost.

For the municipality, the handover marks an important milestone. The funding provides six million euros for the first two phases of the school’s development. Among other things, this will make it possible to establish a branch of the full-time school programme at Grundschule Dreiländereck.

Three Construction Phases

The development of the school is planned in three phases.

In the first phase, the school will be extended to include four new classrooms, an assembly hall and a canteen with a serving kitchen. Additional rooms for differentiated learning and quiet spaces will complement the programme. At the same time, the existing fire station building will be demolished and the schoolyard towards Kirschenstraße will be extended and redesigned.

In the second phase, the 1964 building will be extended on the courtyard side. Four additional classrooms, together with further functional and differentiated learning spaces, will be built on stilts.

The third phase focuses on the modernisation of the existing buildings from 1928 and 1964. Alongside technical upgrades and the renovation of the main sanitary facilities, targeted openings between rooms will enable new learning concepts. At the same time, the existing buildings will be seamlessly connected to the new extensions.

Connecting Existing and New

A key part of the design is the approach to the existing school buildings. The structures from different periods are not considered in isolation but are developed into a coherent school environment through the new extensions.

The different construction phases build on the existing fabric step by step. New classrooms, communal areas and functional spaces extend the existing programme, while targeted interventions within the older buildings allow them to be modernised.

The outdoor spaces are also part of this development. The demolition of the existing fire station creates the opportunity to extend and redesign the schoolyard towards Kirschenstraße.

A Place for the Future

Mayor Ralf Uhlenbruch describes Grundschule Dreiländereck as much more than a school building. It is, in his words, a place where the community invests in the future of its children and where Europe is experienced in everyday life. The renovation and extension will create modern and reliable conditions for education and care.

Headteacher Christian Münster also highlights the diversity of the school. Children from more than 20 nations learn together here, with everyday school life shaped by diversity, tolerance and international understanding.

The handover of the funding marks the beginning of a comprehensive development of the school. The project is scheduled for completion by 2030. Metaform’s design connects the existing buildings from 1928 and 1964 with new structures, creating a coherent school building through targeted interventions and extensions.
