On 21 September 2026, Luxembourg’s Minister of Sports, Martine Hansen, visited the construction site of the Velodrome in Mondorf-les-Bains to see how the project is progressing. Two years after construction began, the concrete structure is nearing completion and the distinctive roof structure is now taking shape.
Designed by Metaform in collaboration with Mecanoo, the Velodrome forms part of a wider sports complex that brings together cycling, swimming, school and club sports, training and sports administration. Rather than functioning as a standalone cycling facility, the project is conceived as a shared sports environment connected to the future school and the wider community.
More Than a Velodrome
At the heart of the complex is a 250-metre cycling track designed for training, competitions and sporting events. Around it, the project brings together a swimming pool, sports halls, a climbing wall, a restaurant and facilities for the Fédération du Sport Cycliste Luxembourgeois (FSCL).
The complex will also be used by the International School of Mondorf-les-Bains for physical education, while a sports boarding facility will accommodate training camps and sports teams. The infield at the centre of the cycling track can be divided with nets and used for activities such as badminton and basketball.
This combination of uses creates opportunities for different forms of sporting practice to share the same infrastructure, from high-level cycling and training to school and recreational sport.
An Ecosystem of Shared Infrastructure
For Metaform founder and architect Shahram Agaajani, the project has always been about more than the construction of a Velodrome. He describes it as an ecosystem in which different activities and functions can interact, with several facilities brought together within a single building.
The approach also responds to the relationship between the sports complex and the future school. By sharing facilities such as the swimming pool and sports halls, the project avoids the need to duplicate infrastructure while creating closer connections between education and sport.
For Mondorf-les-Bains Mayor Steve Reckel, this connection with education is particularly important. The future school, which is planned to accommodate around 1,600 students, will be able to make use of the sports facilities, while the swimming pool will also serve school sports in the surrounding region. This shared use of infrastructure can help reduce travel for students while making better use of the facilities throughout the day.
The complex extends across approximately 28,000 m², while around 10,000 m² will ultimately be occupied by the cycling track and its seating area. Bringing multiple functions together within this footprint contributes to a more compact approach to the development and reduces the resources required for construction and future maintenance.
A Building Shaped by Its Landscape
The architectural approach is also reflected in the relationship between the building and its surroundings. The complex has a low, elongated form that sits within the landscape, with a green, gently curved surface helping to integrate the building into its setting.
The roof of the Velodrome forms a distinctive circular element within this composition and will become a visible landmark from further away.
The structural character of the project is now becoming increasingly apparent on site. Large steel beams, approximately six metres high, are being installed to support the roof. The concrete works are expected to be completed in October, with the roof planned to cover and be sealed by the end of the year.
A New Stage for Cycling and Sport in Luxembourg
During the visit, Minister Martine Hansen also addressed the project’s revised budget, which was raised to €98 million by the Chamber of Deputies. The initial budget had been around €64 million. According to the minister, the increase reflects higher construction costs as well as additional requirements, including accessibility, access arrangements and new regulations from the international cycling federation.
The Velodrome is intended to provide Luxembourg with a dedicated infrastructure for track cycling and to support the development of the discipline, particularly at elite level. At the same time, its integration into a wider sports complex allows the facilities to serve schools, clubs, athletes and the wider community.
With the structure now taking shape and the roof becoming a visible part of the building, the project is entering a new phase. The Velodrome is gradually revealing itself not simply as a cycling venue, but as part of a broader sports ecosystem bringing together sport, education, training and shared infrastructure in Mondorf-les-Bains.
